My great great grandparents moved with their
families when they were young and from then
on the rest of my ancestors have lived here
in New Zealand. They have all met their partners
and had families here. My Nana and Grandad
had three kids and my aunty has been the only
one to marry and move out of New Zealand. The
rest of the family is spread out living across the
North Island.
When my mum was born, she is the youngest of three kids,
her family lived in Wellington but when she was about
six years old they all packed up and moved to
Birkenhead, Auckland for her fathers work. That was
her earliest memory. When she was younger my nana
was the last debutante in Wellington. Although after
they moved they still took many roadtrips back to
Wellington for holiday visits or to see their family that
still lived there. They also took many roadtrips across
New Zealand to places like Palmerston North and the
Coromandel often together with friends as well and had
lots of fun and made many memories.
My Nana, Ursula Sherry, was part of the last
debutante group in the world. She even took her
boyfriend at the time with her and later they
became husband and wife. The picture above
is the group of debutantes she was with. The
girls would have been around the age of 18
and were in their last year of school.
One of the Woodbury family traditons is to play golf.
My dad and his two brothers each year invite family
friends to play golf on the 27th of December with them
each year to celebrate and remember their dad, Ian
Donald Woodbury. They do this because my grandad
had a huge passion for golf and was one of the best of
his time in New Zealand.
My father, Grant and was the middle of three boys,
Craig and Blair. They were born in Auckland grew
up there. Once they had all eventually moved out,
their mum, Gillian, moved to Nelson where Craig
also lived. Gillian lives alone because her husband
Grant had moved from Auckland to Sydney and back
with his family which is me and my siblings.
Gillian, or Gilly as a nickname, was a air traffic
controller for Wellington Airport. She also loved
to march and was part of a band for many years.
Her aunty lived in a castle in Scotland but she never
got to visit. She was born in Christchurch, she has
one sister, two mothers and a father. She grew
up moving quite frequently and moved to Howick
in Auckland after she got married. Thats where
they were all born. But before she was married she
worked in Wellington and then after all of her sons
moved out her Auckland home was too big so she moved
to Nelson and has been there ever since.
